Who Was James Coaxum, Jr.?
James Coaxum, Jr., was born on July 30, 1940 in Awendaw, South Carolina. He graduated from South Carolina State University, Orangeburg, South Carolina as a mathematics major. He taught high school math and science for 30 years as a public school teacher.
James Coaxum, Jr. was also a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church since 1974. Rev. Coaxum served as the lead pastor at several churches in and around Charleston, SC.
James Coaxum, Jr. was a family man who was married for over 50 years to his college sweetheart and the father of 4 children, and 5 grand-children. He lived a life of service that was dedicated to God, his family, students, church members and community.
James Coaxum, Jr., departed this world on May 1, 2019, after a long battle with dementia. To honor his beautiful life, his family created the Rev. James Coaxum Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund to assist students from South Carolina attending HBCU's. This scholarship award will be given to students of high achievement who also plan to lead a life in service to others.
